Question: How do police test a person to see if he or she is under the influence of a controlled substance in Oklahoma?
Answer: Certain police officers have specified training which is referred to as Drug Recognition Expert Training; we refer to that as DRE Training. This is similar to the field sobriety testing, which officers will perform for somebody who is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. DRE-trained officers will administer a series of tests to an individual, and these tests are designed to check for certain things, such as a person’s balance and their ability to estimate the passage of time—those are two of the most common tests. If the officer feels that the person is under the influence of some sort of controlled substance after completing these tests, he will then ask the person if they would agree to a blood test.
