A computer crime is any offense committed using a computer. It may involve stealing information from another person’s computer or from a business (hacking), sending a virus purposefully to someone, sending pornography, copyright piracy (illegally downloading music or movies), identity theft, cyber-bullying and sexting.

Felonies include sexually exploiting someone by sending pornographic or explicit photos by email or posting them online without that person’s permission or for money.

Penalties for misdemeanor computer crimes include 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. Most computer crimes are felonies, and that would mean a fine of up to $100,000 and a prison term of up to 10 years. You could also be sued in civil court.
